A musical tribute to a true Mayo hero

We’re creatures of habit in this country. Not ones for moving away from the norm. This is especially true when it comes to socialising. We go out at the same time to meet the same people, frequent the same establishments and drink the same drinks. During the summer we might throw a concert or two into the mix. But for the most part we don’t exercise our cultural minds.

Shop assistant informs judge of court closures

Judge Devins stated her anger at the basic lack of respect shown to the court as she saw it, saying: “I am now sitting in Ballyhaunis on the last day of the court. I am angry at the lack of basic respect for the District Court. I am saying this as a judge of the District Court and for the staff and the people who use it. It borders on contempt for us all.”

Some like it hot

Mexican food. I had no great love for it as a cuisine until a visit to Wahaca in London a few years back convinced me of its possibilities. Ex-MasterChef winner Thomasina Miers oversees branches of her popular canteen-style eatery throughout London, it won me over with the authentic and flavoursome fare, even though the heat was certainly dialled down for the English palate. In Ireland, we mostly get what passes for Mexican food from a yellow box in the supermarket. When prepared, it often appears on the plate to have already been eaten by someone else. This is not the case at Boojum, the new restaurant on Spanish Parade, here it is all aromatic, fresh, and zesty, a return to its street food roots.

Mayo women attend Ireland’s first political campaign school

Three Mayo women, Sinn Féin councillor Rose Conway-Walsh, Fianna Fáil local area representative for Westport Joan Geraghty and Fianna Fáil local area representative for Castlebar Lisa Chambers have attended Ireland’s first political campaign school EQUIP run by Women for Election in Athlone. The national organisation provides training and support to women from all backgrounds interested in a career in politics. Women for Election brought 20 women from various political parties and backgrounds from across Ireland to complete the three day residential programme.

We have not come as far as we think on drink driving

The drink driver is still with us. I wonder if we have been deluding ourselves a little bit about how much progress we really have made in road safety and to what extent Irish social values have moved.

The seductive enigma of jazz

TRYING TO write about jazz is a bit like trying to paint Connemara. The subjects are so elusive that to describe it conclusively is nigh near impossible and the writer or artist is reduced to focusing on an individual moment that most responds to or echoes their personal or artistic talent.
